While walking down the street, behind buildings, through the woods, and inside vacant houses, I photograph and make prints of the various things I see. Found objects retain and sometimes reveal stories about previous and future inhabitants of these places. In what was once a little girl’s bedroom lie photographs, a paring knife, and a Barbie doll. Playground equipment becomes tangled with creeping weeds. Damaged shingles allow water to seep into an attic, run down the walls, and drill a hole into the floor. In time, the manmade materials in these neglected places break down and persistent vegetation begin to take over. As I revisit the sites, I am witnessing a quiet cycle of decay. From the information I gather, I create visual histories about previous inhabitants and speculate upon the future of that environment. |
